Teams that advance 32 of 48
Already qualified Mexico, USA, Germany, Spain
Already eliminated Haiti, Türkiye, Tunisia
Australia 2nd in Group D, 3 pts

The 2026 World Cup’s expanded format means 32 of 48 teams reach the Round of 32 — the top two from each of the 12 groups plus the eight best third-placed sides. After Matchday 2 the picture is half-drawn: Mexico, the United States, Germany and Spain are through, while Haiti, Türkiye and Tunisia are out. For Australian fans the relevant line is narrower and tenser — the Socceroos sit second in Group D on three points, holding a goal-difference edge over Paraguay with one match to settle it. This page maps the full qualification state and isolates exactly what Australia needs.

Standings and qualification facts are from the 22 June fact pack; per-team final-round clinch scenarios beyond the structural rule were not yet published, so the path analysis below is derived strictly from the current tables.

How Round-of-32 Qualification Works

The maths is simple at the top and subtle at the margin:

That third-place safety net is why almost no group is mathematically dead until the final whistle of Matchday 3: a third-placed side on three or four points can still qualify depending on how the other groups finish. It also means goal difference, not just results, decides who survives — a detail that turns dead-rubber scorelines into live qualification events.

Who Is Already Through

As of 21 June, four teams had secured Round-of-32 places, with Germany confirmed as Group E winners.

Team Group Status
Mexico A Qualified (6 pts, all group games at home)
United States D Qualified (6 pts, +5)
Germany E Qualified as group winners (6 pts, +7)
Spain H Qualified (per match reports after 4–0 v Saudi Arabia)

All four share a profile: two wins from two, or a win-and-qualify points haul, and a goal difference that puts the second round beyond doubt. Germany’s +7 is the strongest in the field.

Who Is Already Out

Three teams cannot reach the knockouts:

Team Group Status
Haiti C Eliminated (0 pts, -4)
Türkiye D Eliminated (0 pts, -3)
Tunisia F Eliminated (0 pts, -8)

Each exited the same way: zero points from two games and a goal difference too poor to catch the third-placed qualifying cut-off. Türkiye’s elimination matters directly to Australia — it removes one Group D rival from the equation entirely.

Australia’s Path: Second Place, One Match to Hold It

This is the line that matters for Australian punters and fans. Group D after two rounds:

Group D P W D L GD Pts
United States 2 2 0 0 +5 6
Australia 2 1 0 1 0 3
Paraguay 2 1 0 1 -2 3
Türkiye 2 0 0 2 -3 0

The structure is clean. The United States are through as group winners. Türkiye are out. That leaves Australia and Paraguay level on three points contesting second place — and they meet in the final group fixture (Australia vs Paraguay, 26 June, 12:00 AEST, Levi’s Stadium). Australia carry the goal-difference advantage into that match: 0 against Paraguay’s -2.

The derived read: a win sends Australia through as runners-up; a draw keeps their superior goal difference intact and, barring a heavy swing elsewhere, holds second place. Only a defeat hands the runners-up spot to Paraguay — after which Australia would depend on the best-third-placed calculation. It is, in effect, a knockout match a round early, and the Socceroos hold the tiebreaker.

The Best-Third-Placed Race

The eight-best-thirds rule is where the unsettled groups live. After Matchday 2 the third-placed teams in the completed groups (A–H) range from Scotland and Sweden on three points down to single-point sides, while Groups I–L have only played once. Because the cut-off depends on every group finishing, no third-place number is safe yet — a point or a single goal can be the difference between eighth-best and ninth.

For Australia this is the fallback, not the plan: the goal-difference edge over Paraguay means the Socceroos’ fate is in their own hands through second place, and the best-third route is the insurance policy rather than the route they are relying on.

What to Watch Next

The decisive window is the Matchday 3 sequence, when groups complete and the third-place table locks:

  • 32 of 48 teams advance: top two per group plus the eight best third-placed sides (decided on points, then goal difference).
  • Mexico, the USA, Germany and Spain are already through; Haiti, Türkiye and Tunisia are out.
  • Australia sit second in Group D on three points, holding a goal-difference edge (0 vs -2) over Paraguay.
  • The Australia–Paraguay final group match (26 June, 12:00 AEST) is effectively a play-off for second place.
  • Per-team final-round clinch scenarios were not yet published; the best-third cut-off remains unsettled.
How many teams qualify from the World Cup 2026 group stage?
Thirty-two of the 48 teams advance to the Round of 32 — the top two from each of the 12 groups (24 teams) plus the eight best third-placed sides.
Has Australia qualified for the Round of 32?
Not yet. Australia are second in Group D on three points with a goal-difference advantage over Paraguay, and the final group match between the two sides will decide the runners-up place.
Which teams have already qualified?
As of 21 June, Mexico (Group A), the United States (Group D), Germany (Group E, as group winners) and Spain (Group H) had secured Round-of-32 places.
How are the best third-placed teams decided?
The eight best third-placed teams across the 12 groups are ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored. Because it depends on how every group finishes, the cut-off is not settled until the final round of group matches.
